An electronic musical instrument approach to training of expiratory and hand muscle movements.

Abstract

Although training of expiratory muscles and hand movements is recommended to prevent limitation of range of motion due to aging or disease, maintaining motivation is a challenge. Therefore, we developed a simple whistle-type electronic musical instrument controlled by an exhalation sensor and a push-switch using Arduino. Since the subject has deformed fingers, muscle weakness, and limited range of motion, we scanned the three-dimensional shape of the fingers and positioned the switches according to the range of motion for the operating part. The aim is to maintain fingertip dexterity through the action of pressing multiple switches and to prevent muscle weakness through the action of blowing in the air. By using the performance of a favorite song as the subject matter, we expect to improve the user's positivity and persistence.
