Service Robot for Laundry Transport and Drink Distribution in Nursing Homes

Abstract

The paper examines the use of service robotics to overcome the challenges in retirement and nursing homes posed by an ageing society and a shortage of manpower. Using the example of the Lio robot, its potential for tasks such as laundry transportation and beverage distribution is being investigated. The two-year project identified challenges for stakeholders through observations and interviews, followed by a phased approach to testing and developing the technology. The results showed that adaptations to the robotic tray and navigation were needed to improve efficiency and reduce the workload of care staff in tasks such as beverage distribution and laundry transportation.
